We The Curious: Fire breaks out at major tourist attraction in Bristol city centre – updates

A fire has broken out in the centre of Bristol this afternoon, at one of the city’s most famous attractions. Smoke was seen billowing from We The Curious – a science centre on Millenium Square – around 2.30pm this afternoon (Saturday, April 9).

Police and fire crews are in attendance and people have been evacuated from the scene. Bristol Live reports that the pall of smoke from the blaze can be seen from locations across the city.

Our photographer at the scene has reported that the fairground in Millenium Square is now closed – although children were still playing on it until 2.40pm. Avon and Somerset Police have also closed Anchor Road, to restrict access to the site.

Meanwhile, We The Curious has given an update to the public on Twitter. In a post, the science centre and charity said: “Our venue has been evacuated following a fire alarm, caused by a fire on our roof.

“Avon Fire and Rescue Service and the police are currently on-site, all staff and visitors are accounted for. More updates to follow as we have them.”

Just after 2.30pm, the fire alarm could be heard ringing across Millenium Square and dramatic photos show smoke pluming into the sky behind the fairground ferris wheel. Flames were visible on the roof of the science centre.

Firefighters were seen entering the building from the rear, during which time staff and police were ushering the public towards Pero’s Bridge. Fire crews were then spotted tackling the fire from above, using cranes.
