5 hacks for camping with kids

1. Make checklists

From shopping checklists to clothing checklists to essential items checklists, the more checklists the better, in our opinion!

It may also be helpful to plan your meals for the week, and create a food checklist underneath each meal — this way you won’t be left without necessary ingredients (like the tomato sauce for a classic sausage roll dinner)

2. Camp close to home

If this is your first time camping with your kids, it’s best to choose a campsite close to home, says Birges.

“This means less travel time and if you are ill-prepared, you’re only a stone’s throw away,” she says.

3. Check the weather

Especially in the age of La Niña, it’s definitely in your best interest to take a look at what the weather’s planning leading up to your camping trip.

Aussie summers can bring all kinds of rainforest-type weather, from humid heat to raging storms, so make sure you adjust your packing as needed.

4. Pack comfortable

Comfy clothes are necessary for kids who will no doubt spend the entire holiday running into bushes and mud and dripping ice-cream down their chins!

Make sure you bring plenty of clothes to change into and nothing that’s too precious.

5. Don’t forget toilet paper!

A rule of thumb for any parent is to always bring toilet paper (or tissues) wherever you go.

On a camping holiday, the need is even greater. If campgrounds run out — which they often do — you’ll be covered, and you and your kids will thank you for it.
