The best posh Australia camping holiday

The best posh Australia camping holiday

The idea is that you can have a sustainable holiday in spectacular bushland, getting as close to nature as possible, leaving as small an imprint as possible, but still retain an element of urban comfort and style. It’s camping for people who hate camping – so in other words, for people just like us.

Even though I grew up in Australia, I have spent the past 30-odd years living in London, where the closest I get to nature is a walk across the common for an artisanal oat milk latte. As for 19-year-old Eadie, let’s just say the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. She’s a memory foam and 800 thread-count kind of girl.

Various shades of off-gridness

This is not to say we don’t both love the great outdoors. We do, as long as it comes with four walls and a roof, which is why road-testing “premium off-grid” on a trip to see family in Melbourne sounded just the thing.

But as we quickly learnt, there are various shades of off-gridness. Take, for example, Alkina Lodge – set in 100 acres of scrubby, untouched bushland along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. This cluster of three architect-designed, four-bedroom eco lodges are powered by wind and solar energy, but inside they are unapologetic five-star luxury, with modern Australian art hanging on the walls, Gaggenau kitchen appliances and rainforest showers.
