GREENSBORO – Former men’s golf All-American Alex Smalley, who graduated from Duke in 2019, posted his best PGA Tour payday of the season by finishing tied for 29th this weekend at the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.
Smalley carded three rounds in the 60s, including a dazzling 64 on Friday, as the 2019 ACC Men’s Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year earned $41,013 with his top 30 finish. Playing on a sponsor’s exemption at the Wyndham, Smalley’s impressive showing came in a full-field event on the last weekend of the PGA Tour regular season.
Making the cut in each of the three PGA Tour events he’s entered this season, Smalley was tied for 22nd (4-under, 284) at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in March and tied for 47th (8-under, 276) at the John Deere Classic in July. He earned $28,000 in prize money in Puntacana and $17,339 at the John Deere.
The Wyndham marks the fifth PGA Tour event Smalley has played as a professional and he has now earned a little more than $150,000 on the Tour. Last season, he shot 3-under during the final round of the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship and tied for 14th place, earning him the largest paycheck of his career at $65,000.
More recently, he posted back-to-back finishes in the top five on the Forme Tour, an eight-event circuit providing U.S.-based players a route to the Korn Ferry Tour qualifying tournament, with PGA Tour Canada off limits due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Smalley wasn’t the only Blue Devil in the top 30 at the Wyndham, as Kevin Streelman continues his resurgence on the PGA Tour by finishing tied for seventh at 14-under, 266. The 2001 Duke graduate will enter the FedEx Cup Playoffs that begin next week in 58th place. The top 30 in the standings following the next two weeks of playoff events qualify for the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
