How we choose the best hotels in Las Vegas

When creating our list of the top hotel and resort picks in Las Vegas, the Good Housekeeping Institute experts evaluated each property on its location, price, staff, comfort, cleanliness, amenities and more. We scoured the internet and researched dozens of the best hotels and resorts, read through hundreds of five-star reviews and have personally stayed at many of the picks featured on this list.

When is the best time to visit Las Vegas?

Located in the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas has some incredibly warm summers that may be a bit too hot for the average traveler, hitting temperatures higher than 100°F. To avoid the peak heat, the best times to head over to Sin City are during spring and fall. The weather is still nice and warm for poolside activities but not too hot to keep you inside all day.

Winter tends to be a very popular time for Vegas, especially during holidays like New Year’s Eve, so you might find it difficult to secure a room. You’ll likely see an increase in hotel prices during this time. If possible, try and secure a stay during the middle of the week since most other travelers will be venturing to Vegas for a weekend getaway.

What’s the best area to stay in Vegas?

Depending on whether you’re looking to hit the casinos or hoping for a relaxing poolside getaway, finding the right area to stay in Vegas can turn your average vacation into the trip of a lifetime.

If you want to be right in the center of all the action, consider staying on The Strip, where you’ll find a plethora of restaurants, casinos, nightlife and more. This is a great location for first-timers who don’t want to deal with figuring out transportation to and from the most active areas. But, keep in mind that staying on The Strip definitely costs more due to the convenience of the location. Many of the resorts on the strip charge a resort fee which is added to your hotel room price.

Downtown Vegas is another great location to spend your time, especially around Freemont Street District. This is another large tourist area, so you won’t be quite getting off the beaten path, but you’ll be surrounded by street performers, cool restaurants and unique museums.

If you want a more relaxing trip, you may try and stay a bit farther away without all the noise, hustle and bustle. Consider picking out a nearby resort where you won’t have to leave the premise and can fully enjoy your time at the spa, in-house bars and restaurants and luxury rooms.
